Punakha Dzong

Punakha Dzong, also known as Pungtang Dewa Chhenbi Phodrang, is widely regarded as the most beautiful fortress in Bhutan. Built in 1637 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, it sits majestically at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. Visitors cross a traditional cantilever bridge to discover a complex filled with intricate wood carvings, vivid murals, and sacred relics. As the winter residence of the monastic body, it serves as a spiritual heart for the kingdom and a pinnacle of Bhutanese architecture. The dzong is particularly breathtaking in spring when lilac-colored jacaranda trees bloom against its white-washed walls.
